It depends on where you and your documents are from. Residents of the United States and Canada can rent with a debit card; residents of Mexico and all other countries need a credit card.
United States and Canada
Debit cards are accepted
- Driver’s license and other documents issued in the same country.
- Valid for the rental payment and for the security deposit.
- No prior approval: simply present it when you pick up the car.
Mexico and other countries
A credit card is required
- Valid and in the main driver’s name.
- Must be presented in person when picking up the vehicle.
- Renting with a debit card is not available.
Why we ask for the card
The card is requested for the security deposit, which is not a charge: it is a temporary hold that is released when the vehicle is returned under the agreed conditions. See the amount for each category in our credit card authorization hold policy.
If you do not have a credit card of your own
The rental may be made in the name of someone who does, provided that person signs the contract, presents their card and photo ID, and is registered as a driver of the vehicle. See the requirements to rent a car.
