Mexico City Airport Car Rental: The Complete 2026 Guide

A Mexico City airport car rental is the most comfortable way to reach the day trips around the Valley of Mexico — Teotihuacán, Puebla and Tepoztlán. This guide covers how renting works at Mexico City airport (AICM), what you need, the insurance required by law, and how to avoid surprise fees. Planning your trip? See our guide to things to do in Mexico City.

How car rental works at the airport

Mexico City International Airport (AICM) has two terminals (T1 and T2) with counters for the main rental agencies. After you land you pick up your car and head into the city. Book with a company that shows the full, all-in price up front so nothing changes at the counter.

What you need to rent a car

  • A valid driver’s license from your home country.
  • A passport or official photo ID.
  • A credit card in the main driver’s name for the deposit hold (debit cards are often not accepted).
  • Minimum age is usually 21+, with a possible young-driver surcharge under 25.

The insurance you can’t skip

Mexican law requires third-party liability insurance from a Mexican insurer on every vehicle. Your home auto policy and your credit card’s rental coverage do not meet this requirement. The basic liability is mandatory and can’t be waived; optional damage and theft protection (CDW/LDW) is up to you.

⚠️ Why “cheap” quotes get expensive: many online rates exclude the mandatory Mexican insurance, so the price jumps at the counter. Always compare the all-in price with insurance included.

👉 No surprises with Veico: our Mexico City car rental rates are all-inclusive — mandatory insurance and unlimited mileage are already in the price, with no hidden fees.

Driving in Mexico City

Traffic can be heavy, so avoid rush hour. Note the Hoy No Circula program, which restricts certain cars by day and the last digit of the license plate; most recent rental cars carry an exempt emissions sticker, but confirm it. For day trips — Teotihuacán (about an hour), Puebla or Tepoztlán — use the toll highways and keep cash for the booths.

Driving tips

  • Avoid rush hour and use a navigation app for traffic.
  • Check the car’s emissions sticker against Hoy No Circula.
  • Keep cash for highway toll booths.
  • Keep your rental contract and insurance document in the car.

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth renting a car in Mexico City?

Inside the city, the Metro is often faster. But for day trips to Teotihuacán, Puebla or Tepoztlán, a car is more comfortable and economical, especially for a group.

Do I need the Mexican insurance?

Yes. Third-party liability from a Mexican insurer is required by law and can’t be replaced by your home policy or credit card. Make sure it’s included in your quote.

What is “Hoy No Circula”?

A program that limits certain cars from driving on specific days, based on the day, the sticker and the last digit of the plate, to reduce pollution. Cars with a 00 or 0 emissions hologram are exempt.
