Mérida Airport Car Rental: The Complete 2026 Guide

Renting a car is the best way to explore Yucatán at your own pace, with Uxmal, the cenotes, Izamal and the Gulf beaches all within reach. This Mérida airport car rental guide covers how it works, what you need, the insurance required by law, and how to avoid surprise fees. Planning your trip? See our guide to things to do in Mérida.

How car rental works at the airport

Mérida International Airport (Manuel Crescencio Rejón, MID) is about 15 minutes from downtown. The main rental agencies have counters there, so you pick up your car and head straight into the city or onto the highway. Book with a company that shows the full, all-in price up front.

What you need to rent a car

  • A valid driver’s license from your home country.
  • A passport or official photo ID.
  • A credit card in the main driver’s name for the deposit hold (debit cards are often not accepted).
  • Minimum age is usually 21+, with a possible young-driver surcharge under 25.

The insurance you can’t skip

Mexican law requires third-party liability insurance from a Mexican insurer on every vehicle. Your home auto policy and your credit card’s rental coverage do not meet this requirement. The basic liability is mandatory and can’t be waived; optional damage and theft protection (CDW/LDW) is up to you.

⚠️ Why “cheap” quotes get expensive: many online rates exclude the mandatory Mexican insurance, so the price jumps at the counter. Always compare the all-in price with insurance included.

👉 No surprises with Veico: our Mérida car rental rates are all-inclusive — mandatory insurance and unlimited mileage are already in the price, with no hidden fees.

Driving in Yucatán

Yucatán has some of the calmest, safest roads in Mexico — ideal for a road trip. From Mérida you can easily reach Uxmal, Chichén Itzá, the cenotes of Cuzamá and Homún, Izamal and Celestún. Mind the topes (speed bumps) entering and leaving towns, and keep cash for the toll booths.

Driving tips

  • Drive in daylight on rural roads.
  • Watch for topes, often unmarked.
  • Keep cash for tolls and fuel.
  • Keep your rental contract and insurance document in the car.

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth renting a car in Mérida?

Yes. The main sights (Uxmal, cenotes, Izamal, Celestún) are spread across the state and public transport is limited, so a car is more comfortable and economical, especially for a group.

Do I need the Mexican insurance?

Yes. Third-party liability from a Mexican insurer is required by law and can’t be replaced by your home policy or credit card. Make sure it’s included in your quote.

How far is the airport from downtown Mérida?

About 15 minutes, southwest of the city.
