Colima National Airport (COL), in Cuauhtémoc, is small and calm, just like the state it serves. And precisely because Colima is best enjoyed through short getaways, to Comala, to the volcanoes, to Manzanillo, the smartest move on landing is to leave with your own car. Here’s how to rent hassle-free and make the most of the region.

Why renting a car in Colima makes sense
Colima is a small state with scattered attractions: the capital, the Magic Town of Comala, the volcano area and the Manzanillo beaches an hour and a half away. Public transport between these points is limited and inflexible. A rental car lets you build your own itinerary and chain together historic center, magic town, lagoon and sea in a single trip.
Requirements to rent a car
- A valid driver’s license (a foreign license works in most cases).
- Official ID or passport.
- A credit card in the driver’s name for the security deposit.
- Minimum age, usually 21 to 25 depending on the category.
Check the insurance coverage before signing and photograph the car at pickup. At Veico we explain everything in plain English so there are no surprises.
Tips for driving around Colima
Colima’s roads are good and the traffic is relaxed compared with the big cities. The route to Manzanillo uses a toll highway (bring a way to pay). In the volcano area and around Laguna La María, take the mountain roads slowly and fill the tank before heading up, as services are scarce.
