Tijuana International Airport (TIJ) has a unique advantage: the Cross Border Xpress (CBX), a pedestrian bridge that connects it directly with San Diego. That makes it one of the most practical gateways in northwestern Mexico, and the best way to take advantage of it is to leave the terminal with a rental car. Here’s how to do it without the runaround.

Why renting at Tijuana airport makes sense
Tijuana is a sprawling city hugging the border, and many of its best experiences are far from downtown: Playas de Tijuana, Rosarito, Ensenada and the Valle de Guadalupe. With a car from the airport you move at your own pace, cross via the CBX if you’re coming from California, and string together the wine route without depending on tours or taxis.
Requirements to rent a car
- A valid driver’s license (a foreign license works in most cases).
- Official ID or passport.
- A credit card in the driver’s name for the security deposit.
- Minimum age, usually 21 to 25 depending on the vehicle category.
If you plan to cross the border into the United States with the rental, mention it when booking: it requires specific permits and insurance. Driving within Baja California is no problem. At Veico we clear everything up in English before handing over the keys.
Tips for driving at the border
Be patient with traffic near the international line and plan crossings for off-peak hours. The highways to Rosarito and Ensenada (the scenic route is gorgeous) are toll roads; carry a way to pay. And if you’re headed to the Valle de Guadalupe to taste wine, designate a driver, safety first.
