Guanajuato International Airport (BJX) sits in Silao, about 25 minutes from León and a stone’s throw from the state capital. It’s the gateway to the Bajío, and the most convenient way to make the most of it is to leave the terminal with your own car: that way you drive to León, Guanajuato or San Miguel de Allende whenever you like, without fighting transit schedules. Here’s how to rent hassle-free.

Why renting at León airport makes sense
BJX serves a whole region of nearby cities, León, Guanajuato, Irapuato, Silao, Dolores Hidalgo and San Miguel de Allende, that are far better visited by road. Distances are short and the highways are good. A rental car lets you chain together Bajío destinations in a single trip without relying on buses or taxis between towns.
Requirements to rent a car
- A valid driver’s license (a foreign license works in most cases).
- Official ID or passport.
- A credit card in the driver’s name for the security deposit.
- Minimum age, usually 21 to 25 depending on the category.
Before signing, check what the insurance covers and photograph the car at pickup. At Veico we explain coverage and conditions in plain English, with no fine print.
Tips for driving around the Bajío
The Bajío highways are among the best in the country, but watch for toll booths (bring cash or card) and for fog on winter mornings. For Guanajuato city, be ready for narrow streets, tunnels and scarce parking: many prefer to leave the car in a lot and walk the center. GPS is your best friend.
