Go early to beat the heat and the crowds, bring water and, if the beach below the ruins is open, take a dip with a view of history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cenotes_the_jungles_fresh_water\"><\/span>Cenotes: the jungle\u2019s fresh water<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Riviera Maya is cenote country, natural sinkholes of crystal-clear water. Near Tulum you\u2019ll find the <strong>Gran Cenote<\/strong>, ideal for snorkeling with turtles, <strong>Dos Ojos<\/strong>, famous for diving, and <strong>Cenote Calavera<\/strong>. Swimming in these caverns and pools is an experience like no other; follow the rules (biodegradable sunscreen only) to help protect them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Beaches_and_beach_clubs\"><\/span>Beaches and beach clubs<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Tulum\u2019s <strong>beach<\/strong> is the stuff of postcards: fine white sand, turquoise water and a string of beach clubs and boutique hotels. <strong>Playa Para\u00edso<\/strong> and the area near the ruins are among the prettiest. The hotel-zone road is lined with restaurants, bars and shops in that boho-chic style that made Tulum famous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sian_Ka_an_and_Coba\"><\/span>Sian Ka an and Cob\u00e1<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To the south stretches the <strong>Sian Ka\u2019an Biosphere Reserve<\/strong>, a World Heritage Site: mangroves, canals, birds and stunning biodiversity, visited on responsible tours. Inland, the ruins of <strong>Cob\u00e1<\/strong> preserve one of the tallest pyramids on the peninsula, surrounded by jungle. Both make excellent day trips from Tulum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Getting_around_Tulum\"><\/span>Getting around Tulum<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In Tulum, distances are deceiving: it\u2019s several kilometers from town to the beach, the cenotes are spread along the highway, and Cob\u00e1 or Sian Ka\u2019an are far off. Taxis are notoriously expensive and not always easy to find.
